5 Travel Essentials That Will Save Your Trip And Your Wallet

Amanda SchillerTuesday 10 August 2021

When it comes to traveling to new places, almost everyone falls into the same category. Most people want to visit exotic destinations, stay in swanky accommodations, and do all of the activities that the local area has to show them. They want to get the most out of their travel experience…but they also don’t want to break the bank.

Luckily, there are plenty of money-saving travel hacks out there that will allow you to go on your dream vacation without putting yourself behind the 8-ball financially.

This article will take a look at the 5 best travel essentials that will save your trip and your wallet.

Credit card points

Credit card points are one of the best ways to alleviate the hits to your bank account when it’s time to travel. Almost all credit cards will reward you with points when you use them for everyday spending. What’s even better is that lots of credit card companies will gear their rewards program specifically towards travel perks.

By opening up the right credit card and using it for your everyday purchases, you will be able to use your rewards to pay for part of your trip. The amount of money that you earn through credit card rewards will depend on which card you use and how much you spend with it. However, a year’s worth of spending will usually result in a few hundred dollars worth of points. This should be good enough for at least one flight but you could also use it for your accommodations or for spending money while abroad.

If you don’t use your credit card to pay for your airfare then we’d strongly recommend enrolling in an airline frequent flyer program.

Airline miles

Pretty much every airline offers some type of frequent flyer rewards program. If you don’t already use one then you should start immediately. Most rewards programs work by giving you free “miles” for each mile that you fly with that airline. If you are someone who flys frequently then this can start to add up incredibly quickly.

By strategically flying with the same airline consistently throughout the year, you will be able to rack up frequent flyer miles and save a ton of money when you are booking your flights for your next vacation.

Learn the off-season

Another great way to help take the stress off your wallet is to find out when the off-season is for your next travel destination. Not only will this save you money but it will also most likely result in a better experience overall since your destination will be less crowded.

If traveling during the off-season isn’t possible because you have an inflexible schedule then you might even consider changing your destination entirely. If the only month that you’re free to travel is in July, then it might make more sense to go somewhere in South America where it’s technically winter instead of Disney World where it will be completely overrun.

Use travel apps

Since the advent of the internet, traveling has gotten exponentially easier. These days, there is a travel app for just about everything that will make your experience much easier. Some attractions, like Disney World, will have their own app entirely that can really enhance your experience.

Here are a few good apps to consider for general travel planning:

  1. Overall – Orbitz, Kayak
  2. Lodging – Airbnb, VRBO, Hostelworld
  3. Flights – Hopper

While using some of these apps may feel a bit overwhelming at first, once you get used to them you will never know how you booked a trip without them.

Get a room with a kitchen

The last travel essential that can save your trip and your wallet is doing your best to find a room with a kitchen. This is especially true if you are traveling with a family or large group. You will be amazed at the amount of money that you can save by cooking even just one meal at home compared to eating out for everything. By getting a room with a kitchen you can eat breakfast at home, pack a lunch to go, and then just eat dinner out. This will essentially cut your food bill by 66 percent.

Most hotel rooms are not going to have a kitchen attached. However, booking a condo or similar style of room through Airbnb will give you a much better chance of finding one. Even if the condo is a little bit more expensive than a hotel room, the money saved by not eating out may make up the difference.
